Kentucky is home to 242,400 horses and the total value of the state’s equine and equine-related assets is estimated at $23.4 billion, according to the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey. This survey identified 35,000 equine operations and 1.1 million acres devoted to horses.
Kentucky is horse country and in this southern-central state the horse is revered. The Bluegrass State is well known for breeding world renowned thoroughbreds and is the proud host of the biggest day in horse racing, the Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky does show a unique lead in the dollar value of their animals since it leads the US in the 1.75 billion dollars worth of horses and other equines that are bought and sold each year.
The city of Lexington, located in the Bluegrass Region of the state, bills itself as the horse capital of the world. This horse crazy city is home to the Kentucky Horse Park, a working horse farm and education theme park that is the only one of its kind in the world.
Though Kentucky is not one of the largest states, its geography is very diverse and most of the state enjoys a moderate, four-season climate. From the scenic peaks and valleys of the Daniel Boone National Forest to the crystal clear waters of The Land Between the Lakes Kentucky is a trail riders mecca.
Kentucky is also renowned for its bourbon whisky distilleries, bluegrass music, and college basketball. The largest city is Louisville followed up by Lexington and Owensboro.
